Stepping Down Speech –Manorama Singh, 5th Student Council President
A very good afternoon to our GOH, Mrs. Isabel Yeo our principal Mrs. Susan Crossley, our vice principal Ms Jeanne Ho teachers, distinguished guests and fellow schoolmates.
22nd April 2007.exactly a year before, where by, I was standing right here, perhaps around this time as well delivering my speech as I received the opportunity to lead the school, as the newly elected student council president. During that speech I mentioned several aspirations and goals that I wish to achieve in order to make my school a better place.
As the 5th Student Council, we have planned the school’s major events such as Teacher’s Day 2007 as well as collaborated with the various student leaders to organize the Sec 1 orientation camp 2008 .Also, we embarked on a fundraising project for our school’s indoor gymnasium and raised $1200. We also established the external department through which the council partook in a Befriender Programme where we conducted workshops for aspiring leaders in primary schools. Looking back, it makes me feel satisfied and contented that the 5th Student Council has achieved these goals. However, while doing so I definitely cannot forget the people who have made all this possible.
First and foremost our former principal and vice principal, Mrs. Dolly Chan & Mrs. Das who found me worthy enough for this position that I have held for a year. Also our current principal and vice principal, Mrs. Susan Crossley and Ms Jeanne Ho, who have been excellent role models for me to follow.
A big thank you has to be given to the two individuals who I consider as my guiding mentors in this path of leadership and they are none other than Ms Zachia Low and Mrs. Annie Ong. I find myself fortunate to be able to have such wonderful mentors who have at times stretched me to my limits only to make me discover that I can seek beyond.
I would also like to thank all my teachers every one of them. Be it my form teacher, Mr. Tan or my arena teacher-in charge cum coach, Ms Naz a source of moral support.
Along with them, my source of passion to make the school a greater place to be in. My 5th Student Council. A council that I truly cherish. The people who have endured all my demanding deadlines as well as my craziness after a long day of work and though I do not say this often but it is high time to tell the council that you have been an important part of me and I will definitely miss you.
And to boost this passion of mine, to lift me up whenever I am down, my friends. All of them who have always been there for me. Joan, Saima, Mary Clare, Melissa, Shab, Dahlia, Karin and Li Jie all of my dearest friends even those who I have not mentioned, who have tolerated my moods whenever I was stressed with council and have ensured to make me smile with their warm presence.
Not forgetting my parents who have been a pillar of strength to me. The ones who have always supported me in whatever I aspire to achieve. The last person that I would like to thank an all rounded individual who makes my every day seem precious and useful Someone I look up to,a role model to me, My brother.
And definitely I have to thank SJC. One school that would never fail to shout and scream for their friends to egg them on. The school that always sets itself apart from others And as you can see with the length of my thank you-s it might seem as though as I have just won an Oscar. However recollecting my wonderful memories with council as well as my life altering year as the president is nothing less than winning an Oscar. With this I would like to end my speech with the very saying I had use to end my speech last yr. a quote by William Blake which I hope would be a source of determination for the 6th student council
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
Thank You Ladies & Gentlemen
Hand Over Ceremony ( BP NP Mentoring) By Manorama Singh , Incoming President
A very good afternoon to our advisor, Mr. Dy, distinguished guests and fellow mentors. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Manorama Singh, A Year 1 Business Student in Ngee Ann.
I would not have been standing here, delivering my speech as the President of BP NP Mentoring if it had not been for the many people who have given me the correct guidance and support.
Hence, I would like to thank the graduating committee of BP Mentoring who have noted my strengths and thought me worthy of this prestigious and valuable position. I would like to extend my heart felt gratitude to them as they have been excellent role models that I ought to emulate Even throughout the preparations for this Handover Ceremony of ours, they stayed by our sides and gave us full support to ensure today’s success. Thank you once again senior.
I would also like to thank our advisor, Mr.Dy who has recently joined us but has been with us through out, providing us with valuable lessons and way to improve ourselves as leaders. My new committee and I are definitely looking forward to a bountiful year ahead filled with events.
For this year, our objectives would be catering to three specific groups of people and they would be our mentors, our partnered organizations and the children (mentees) that we attend to.
Firstly, for our Organizations.
Improvements are always possible and necessary. Hence, we aim to improve the range of our volunteering abilities by partnering more organizations.
Secondly, Mentors
In order to meet the demands of partnering more organizations, we will require more manpower. Hence; we require more helping hands and aim to have a larger recruitment drive as well heighten publicity for mentoring.
And thirdly and most importantly, our Mentees
Since, this organization’s prime purpose is to reach out and help, our objective has to include the main set of individuals, which would be the children. We aim to provide more assistance and time so as to see through a progress in the children.
Together as a team, we, mentors will strive and work as one to extend the helping hand to our various partnered organizations and would definitely want to make a difference in each child’s life that we will mentor with dedication.
As for all the children and teachers that have kindly graced our occasion, on behalf of the Mentoring, I would like to thank you once again for your presence and would also hope that the relationship that we have forged with the various organizations continues to grow stronger.
Last but not the least,I would like to share this quote from Sir William Blake that has inspired me to serve Mentoring with pride and lead with utmost conviction through the way we perceive things,
To see a World in a Grain of Sand,
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.
Thank You
Speech for My Brother during his Wedding Reception
It is definitely much easier to be on stage, pulling Roshan’s legs or running around helping out in the wedding preparations than standing up behind this podium, no where to run, and saying this to my brother, Roopesh.
It only seems like yesterday as I saw Roopesh grow up, from a young boy ever so excited about his computer games to the man who sits anxiously in front of me; at his wedding reception table thinking what is his sister going to say next.
Then again what I just said is utterly nonsensical. As it is me who had the privilege to grow up under the most wonderful older brother.
Being 9 years my senior, you have been one individual who has seen it all. My endless tantrums and my whiny days. Like any other siblings, we argued, yelled, and we fought.
Due to the rather huge age gap, I cannot remember in detail my childhood that I shared with you but I sure know that ever memory that was captured in photographs showed the same thing and that was, I loved your company.
Even as we grow up, your witty remarks and charming personality never failed to make me laugh. A strange undying optimism was what you always had. Even when faced with challenges, you could always find something to smile about.
And what intrigued me the most was what you sought into as a solution to all your worries and problems.
And that would be… A cup of tea. Yes that’s right. A cup of tea. Perhaps like what once a wise man said, “There is no trouble so great or grave that cannot be much diminished by a nice cup of tea”
That would aptly describe you bhaiya. To many, tea would just serve as a beverage .But as for you and me, it created a special bond. Each day, you would try to find new ways and tactics to get me to make your favourite home made ginger tea. Your ways could range from bribing me into the kitchen promising to have a lovely conversation or to extravagant plans where you would save me from a scolding from our parents if I made your tea. You were successful each time for the simple reason that I loved spending those 15-20 minutes, talking to you, knowing that I always had someone I could fall back on. As you sip on your tea, we could talk about anything under the sun and have a great time.
I may not verbalize it often how important you are to me but I’m glad that I have this chance to tell you bhaiya, that I love you and I can’t describe my happiness as I join in the celebration of your life changing moment as you sit next to your lovely wife, Sharan.
As for Sharan, It is a joy to have you as part of our family. There may be times that I have annoyed you but then again, you can’t blame me as I spend too much time with my brother and his influence is inevitable.
But one thing’s for sure, I am aware of the amount of happiness I have received as I grew up with the man you are sitting next to.Im certain without a doubt that you will have a blissful marriage and I wish the both of you the happiest times together.
As some may know I am a chatterbox and especially since it’s about my brother I have a lot more to say. However I shall complete and convey my remaining words with a hug to the most special person in my life, bhaiya (:
